Has anybody used Quintessential Media Player (the latest beta just was recently released). It used to be called QCD or Quintessential Player. I haven't played with it a lot, but the free-form skinning engine is pretty cool. It has quite a few plug-ins available as well, for everything from visualizations, to input/output, to library managers (i.e., utilize an external media manager such as Music Collector).
I just found out about the program, so I'm curious if anybody else has past experience with it. Seems like most folks are familiar with WinAmp, foobar2000, iTunes, etc. but this one was "news" to me.
One thing I do like is that it supports the notion of "Track Artist" and "Album Artist" when browsing your library. And it supports ReplayGain. ![]()

Some nice features but awful user interface...

QCD was my default player before MC. Now that I have gotten used to MC, I have noticed that the sound quality of QCD or QMP is no where near as good as MC, But I do like alot of the features of QCD. I don't use it as much anymore, but it will remain on my system.

Well to be quite fair, mC's sound quality is more of a tribute to the Bass library ![]()
Anyways, it surprises me that QMP would have poorer audio quality, but hey, we're happy you switched to mC. ![]()

I've gone back and forth listening to a song in MC and then in QMP and the sound from MC just sounds more crisp. I guess that is the closest I can come to describing it.
As far as the Bass library goes, there has been some work on a Bass plugin for QCD, but I was never able to get it to work quite right.

I used to use QCD. I liked it better than WinAmp, but then I found foobar. Sonique Visualizations is a really nice feature.

qcd is awesome... but musikCube is better.
i still use qcd for tagging though.

QCD was a wonderful audio tool. I liked it way better than either Winamp or Foobar. It had a few nifty music organization features which would put to shame some of the bigger names like JRiver Media Center and Media Monkey, Helium etc.
It also has a pretty powerful tag editor. The newer version (QMP 100 beta) has a much improved tag editing functionality as well as a much needed Media Library. As far as sound quality goes, if you switch to the BASS plugin for QMP with the Shibatch equalizer on, you should not hear any difference.
As far as appearance goes, i will definitely vote for musikCube but right now, QMP has way more features than musikCube and it is one of my personal favourites.
Like i have mentioned before, one of the major reasons why musikCube does not fit in as my main player is because it lacks a few ID3V2 tag fields. With the feature freeze going into place with the latest version i dont expect to see the changes i need in musikCube any time soon. But who knows - i may be surprised!
Thanks,
Bala

Otto has provided an updated mp3 plugin with id3v2 support.

What are the chances that we'll see mC ditch taglib and switch to id3lib, based on Otto's "findings" of memory leaks in taglib, etc?

If Otto's id3lib proves stable, theres a good chance we can switch. Perhaps the bugs I remember having with it (id3lib, not Otto's plugin) are fictional.

I'm switching from Winamp & right now, I'm testing QMP b101, Foobar 2000 & musikCube.
I've also noticed the sound quality issue in QMP & think that both Foobar & musikCube sound better. QMP however has a good interface, with a reasonable mini player, easy to use media library & playlist plus it runs through a proxy. It's hard to ignore the sound quality issue though. Foobar's interface is almost non-existent - that's why musikCube is my current preferred player - despite several issues.

Nick555, glad to see you trying out musikCube (I remember your thread from the winamp forums).
I agree with the sound quality issues. Simply put, the BASS library's kick a**. QCD/QMP has a BASS plugin in development, but it is somewhat buggy at the moment (at least with QMP as I tested it out). musikCube personally sounds better to me than all other players I've tried (fb2k, winamp, QMP, etc. that do not use the BASS libraries) even with no EQ.

Thanks for your reply - I really took some stick in the Winamp forums! ![]()
Was it you who suggested I try musikCube?
I'd have said that the sound between musikCube & Foobar is very close - to my ears. However Foobar is such a pain to figure out! I've heard BASS mentioned a few times - what exactly does it do?

BASS is the audio playback functionality underlying musikCube and musikCore. It's an audio library, mainly for programmers to make dealing with audio easier. http://www.un4seen.com/ for more info.

Its volume control is directly linked to your system's WAVE OUT ability. If you "mute" it but forget to close the application, you've got to wrestle around with your volume settings or start up QCD again to make it right.
...
No thanks.
Thinger, you can "unlink" the volume control in the directsound driver preferences of QMP.
