Problem transferring database to new PC - advise please

Hello, I am setting up my new XP Pro SP2 PC. I have installed musikCube 1.0 RC1 (whereas I used to use the 0.9x version on my old PC).

I am having trouble with bringing in my treasured database. I've saved it on the old PC - I often used to do a backup - and copied the file across to the .musikprojet folder.  Then using Change Database, I've tried to bring it in to my new set up. Sometimes it's there, sometimes not. Sometimes my queries are there sometimes not. It is most inconsistent and frustrating.

Please confirm for me that the Times Played information is stored in the database, coz it's not displaying in my new set up.

Please guide me on what I should be doing. I like mCube and want to continue with the database I've built up.

Re: Problem transferring database to new PC - advise please

That's what I thought, however it hasn't come across. Times played is displayed as Never, whereas over 90% of my database has been played at least once.

Kindly guide me on the correct way of transferring my good working copy of mC from my old PC to my new.

At the moment I am not at all happy, coz it's not happening for me.

[LATE EDIT] ...and my tunage is displayed incorrectly in my sig. This is the code I copied accross. Please tell me what's wrong with it: http://musikcube.com/remote/nowplaying/image/f9d7b1d92c48eb1ce3bc955675d3711b/minibar.png

For now playing go to the main website, select services, select now playing and select configure. It will give you your personal string to paste in. Thats the easiest way. Whats the "change database" feature? I've not seen this. If you ask me the best way to do it would be clear the .musikproject folder (i'm assuming this is the one in Documents and Settings and not for an individual drive) and run mC again. This will generate all the files needed in this folder. Then simply copy across the contents of your old .musikproject folder into this and all should work fine (assuming all files have the same path).

DiGiTaLFX, the problem with that is that it will obliterate his ratings and custom dynamic playlists and regular playlists as well as obliterate any customization he's done with the interface.

Re: Problem transferring database to new PC - advise please

I'm not having any success with all this. I am feeling pretty fed up with it all. Surely this excercise should be straightforward. For many months I've used mC on my other PC. I now have a new one so I want to use mC on the new PC. I installed the latest version musikCube 1.0 RC1 and I want to use my database from the other PC.

I've transferred and set up every other bit of software on this new PC including a new OS, IE6, Firefox browser, Outlook Express, and so on. However mC is not playing the game, and I'm not happy. I require my favourite music player.

I should be grateful if you would instruct me how to get my database and settings from the other PC to the new one.

btw to find the "change database" feature File>Database>Change Database.

No it doesn't: Try move all the files out of .musikproject now. Open mC and look to see it's forgotton all playlists, files, and interface options. Then close mC, move all the original files back into .musikproject and restart mC. Everything is back to normal. The contents of this folder contains all of your mC info (bar the actual music!).

Re: Problem transferring database to new PC - advise please

In my .musikproject folder I have two files: musik_u.db and musikCube_u.ini.

These bring with them the settings and queries which is good, however there is no sign of the Times Played.
That's now lost I 'spose sad

Re: Problem transferring database to new PC - advise please

Thats really odd, timesplayed is no different than anything else in the database, it should move over just the same.

Is your music in the same directory it was on your previous computer?

If your music isn't in the same directory, and you synchronize, then your ratings and times played information will not be retained.  musikCube basically uses the filename as the song's unique identifier -- so when a file is missing, it gets removed.  When the file is found somewhere else, it is added as a new one.

Nope.
New PC. New drive letters.

avatar3d, that also explains why songs get played again on the old PC, eventhough my query asks for songs not played. It's coz I've changed/corrected the filename.

So now I have a new PC, and a new mC database. My library contains 12720 songs.

I frequently do backups. File>Database>Export Database, and save the .db file with the date in the filename.

Got and good other tips???

I'll try to find some time tonight to write a program to help the migration process.  It will be useful to have around.  Keep a copy of your original database.

Re: Problem transferring database to new PC - advise please

Okay, heres a *SIMPLE* little program to help you do what you need. Before you start let me say it comes with no warrenties -- you agree (by downloading this application) that I'm not to be held responsable for anything bad that may happen.

A rundown of how to use it:

Let's pretend I had an old computer with musikCube installed.  Certain files in my database were located in c:\music\, but I now have a new computer, and these SAME files are now located in f:\casey\music\.  The filenames in musikCube's database on the new computer are wrong -- musikMigrate is a tool to help you fix them.

1) download the file: http://www.musikcube.com/~casey/musikMigrate0.1.zip
2) extract anywhere, then run
3) Select the database you wish to migrate as the "Input Database."  PLEASE MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR ORIGINAL BEFORE DOING THIS
4) Using my example, I will use "c:\casey\" as my OLD PATH.  These are where the files were located BEFORE (relative to the old computer)
5) I will use "f:\casey\music\" as the REPLACEMENT PATH.  These are where the files are NOW (relative to the new computer)
6) Press "OK," and wait for a confirmation dialog.

Literally, all filenames in the database beginning with "c:\music" will be replaced by "f:\casey\music"

7) Repeat for different paths, if necessary.

Hope this helps.

Thank You casey.

I'll need to arrange some time and space to give this my full attention. I'll report back idc...

Re: Problem transferring database to new PC - advise please

Well I've made a start on this transfer exercise.

I started again with a new mC, and newly imported .db file. I opened mC and it displayed all my (old) library. And it displayed my (old) Times Played. Hooray. However, nothing played coz it was pointing to my old paths.

Ran your program - thanks casey - directing the paths from the old music folder, to the new music folder. Away we go. Got the confirmation dialog ok and smiled. This is good.

Of course what I hadn't read was:

avatar3d wrote:

7) Repeat for different paths, if necessary.

and I regret to say that for me that is a task far to big to undertake; manually pointing at all my old folders for artists, albums, and so on, and redirecting to new Full paths. I can point to the root folder but not each and every sub-folder hanging on.

Nice idea, however not at all practical for my music folder structure - or have I made a mistake and got something wrong...

Re: Problem transferring database to new PC - advise please

All you have to do is root folders, not all the sub folders.  That would be really silly and completely useless if you had to specify EVERY sub folder.

Please report back.

Re: Problem transferring database to new PC - advise please

I understand.
Is there anyway I can read the db. I want to check my old filepath names. Otherwise I have to unplug all the leads here and go to the old pc and plug 'em all in again.

Try this tool:

http://www.monkeyshinez.net/SQLiteQA/

And for the query: "SELECT songid, filename FROM songs"
