So, I went through all my mp3's and retagged them in mC. Now, when I open up iTunes, the categories are displayed as random numbers, i.e. "54", "643", "2", "78" etc, instead of actual categories. For instance, the category "Jazz" in mC, is displayed as "78" in iTunes. Then I tried renaming the category in iTunes from "78" to "Test" and reloaded the tags in mC, voila, the "Jazz" category in mC was renamed to "Test". Hence, I'll have to retag most of my category tags using iTunes, in order to have them appear correctly in both applications. That is just awkward. In other words, if I'm not mistaking, editing/changing or adding categories in mC is basically useless, when or if one is using other applications to handle mp3's too (like iTunes for transferring files to iPod). Or am I way out of line on this one? I sure hope so.
Feedback on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks a bunch :)

Damn, I thought I made a posting here... But it's gone...
Well, I did a test and tagged a empty file with "Jazz" from the Pop-down-Menu for genre in mC.
In GodFather, mp3infp and Winamp it shows under ID3v1 "Jazz", but under ID3v2 "8" (and no ID3v2 tags in Winamp at all).
Maybe it's because of ID3v2.4 which mC is writing?
And maybe it's because of number coding of the tags? Maybe "8" should be interpreted as "Jazz" but it isn't? If I use own genres, it is shown correctly (besides no ID3v1 tags).

So, is this a bug then?
EDIT: It wouldn't surprise me one bit if iTunes is the bad apple (pun) in this case :)

I make some further testings and I am quite sure it is a bug (or many programs interpret the genre coding wrong; ID3v1 seems to be written correctly).

Thanks DocTriv! Kinda weird it hasn't been detected earlier.

Maybe the problem is new (since the CVS with the BASS update?) and does not appear in older or more spreaded mC versions (e.g. 1.0 RC2).
I am mainly using OGG (there are no probs) and do not check my tags in other players. But I think I have to check my latest MP3s for correct genre tags (luckily, I'be used often mp3tag for tagging because of auto-numbering and "$Dummy"-function).
I will add this issue to my Road to 1.0 final thread.

Thanks for following up DocTriv, I really appreciate the effort, and I'm quite sure everyone else does too :)

Why does mC use version 2.4, I think it should use 2.3 because it is the standard.
The best thing would be an option to decide between 2.3 and 2.4.

Yes, 2.3 would be better. I quote myself from my list:
8. Tagging III:
a) For MP3, musikCube reads ID3v1.x and v2.x, but not the (quite unimportant?) APE format. ID3v2 has a higher priority for mC (so it will show them instead v1), but mC will complete missing v2 tag fields with v1 metadata (if there).
MusikCube writes for MP3 in ID3v1.1 and ID3v2.4 - I suggest to use the more compatible ID3v2.3 instead of v2.4. At the end I wish a seperate tagging for v1 and v2 like in Winamp or at least an option to choose which tag version should be written (e.g. with checkboxes in the song's Properties; ID3v1 and/or ID3v2 and their different versions). There are some tagging bugs (see below under "Bugs" #1)!

jcarrascal made some discoveries regarding the genre tag bug - see here in trac!
